Follow Dr. Ziegler’s tips to get pregnant naturally & learn when to seek extra support
Thinking about starting a family and wondering how to boost natural fertility? You’re not alone. As a fertility doctor, I often meet couples eager for tips to get pregnant naturally before undergoing advanced treatment. From lifestyle tweaks to understanding how to best time intercourse to maximize your chance of conception, there’s a lot someone can do.
Understanding fertility and how to get pregnant
Natural fertility is simply the ability to conceive without medical intervention. It’s influenced by age, health, lifestyle and genetics.
Before diving into strategies for boosting natural fertility, it’s important to understand the basics of how conception happens. For pregnancy to occur, a sperm cell from the male must meet and fertilize an egg from the female. This fertilized egg then implants into the uterus, where it can grow into a healthy pregnancy. However, achieving pregnancy isn’t always straightforward.
Knowing when ovulation occurs
One of the best tips to get pregnant I can give is to track the female’s ovulation. Having a good idea of when the mature egg is released (ovulated) and having intercourse on or around that day can significantly increase a couple’s chance of getting pregnant naturally.
The egg is only viable for fertilization within 24 hours of its release from the ovary. The sperm can live for up to 5 days after being ejaculated in the woman’s vagina during intercourse. That gives you roughly 6 days out of a month when it is even possible to get pregnant.

Tips to get pregnant & boost fertility naturally
By incorporating certain habits and making healthier choices, you can support your body’s natural ability to conceive. Enhancing fertility through better lifestyle choices can also lead to better health outcomes for both parents and the baby.
Maintain a healthy weight
Staying at a healthy weight is crucial for fertility. Being either underweight or overweight can disrupt hormone levels, leading to irregular ovulation or decreased sperm quality. For women, a healthy body mass index (BMI) helps regulate the menstrual cycle and ovulation, while for men, it promotes better sperm health.
Exercise regularly
Regular physical activity boosts your overall health and fertility. But remember, moderation is key. Too much exercise, especially for women, can have the opposite effect. Aim for moderate activities like walking, swimming or yoga.
Avoid smoking and alcohol
Smoking and heavy drinking can negatively impact fertility. Quitting smoking and cutting down on alcohol can significantly improve your chances of conceiving – for both men and women.
Eat a balanced diet
A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients supports reproductive health, while poor dietary choices can negatively impact fertility. Essential nutrients like folic acid, zinc and antioxidants are crucial for reproductive health. Antioxidants protect sperm and egg cells from damage. Foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats and essential nutrients support fertility. Examples include berries, leafy greens, nuts, seeds and fish.
Get regular medical checkups
Routine health checkups can help identify and address any potential issues affecting fertility. Regular visits to a healthcare provider can reveal valuable information about one’s reproductive health and may also indicate issues that can impact fertility.
Reduce caffeine intake
High caffeine intake can affect fertility. It’s best to limit intake to about one to two cups of coffee a day.
Stay hydrated
Good hydration is essential. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain cervical mucus, which is crucial for sperm transport. Dehydration can lead to reduced semen volume and lower sperm count.
Manage stress and mental health
When the body is under chronic stress, it produces cortisol, a stress hormone that can interfere with reproductive hormones like progesterone and estrogen. This can lead to irregular ovulation in women and reduced sperm quality in men. Techniques like meditation, deep-breathing exercises and mindfulness can help manage stress.
Maintain a regular sleep schedule
Good sleep is vital for overall health and fertility hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Disrupted or inadequate sleep can lead to imbalances in these hormones and may affect infertility treatment success rates. Experts say to aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Sleep disorders like insomnia or sleep apnea can affect fertility. Seeking treatment can improve the chances of conception.
A note on underlying conditions
While lifestyle changes and timed intercourse can go a long way toward improving a couple’s chances of getting pregnant, many people experience hidden or underlying causes for infertility. Conditions such as fibroids and hormonal imbalances can affect reproductive health in women, while men may face challenges from low sperm count and motility (ability to move). Consulting a fertility specialist can provide personalized insights on difficulties conceiving and treatment options that address specific challenges, ultimately supporting the goal of pregnancy.
Final tips to get pregnant
Boosting natural fertility involves more than just timing intercourse around ovulation – it’s about taking a holistic approach to one’s health and well-being. However, it’s important to recognize that improving natural fertility doesn’t exclude medical treatments. Every person and fertility journey is unique.
